In Ohio, Pretrial Discovery is covered, by Rule 16 of the Ohio Rules of Criminal Procedure. The process is started by the Defense making a demand for Discovery upon the State of Ohio. At that point, the State is required to produce any evidence in its possession that the State,  the Defense has a reciprocating duty to provide the State with witnesses and evidence that it intends to introduce at trial. If the Defense intends to put forward and alibi defense, that disclosure is required as well. This rule prevents the parties from surprising each other with evidence at trial.domestic violence
